And what better way to find out than to set up the first ever Parenthetical Asides Contest! The rules are simple enough: identify all of the images in the banner (or as many as you can) and e-mail the answers to asidesblog@gmail.com.
For simplicity's sake, you may number your answers according to the following key:
I'm excluding the retro cover of Tales From the Crypt, because honestly even I don't know what those brain-creatures on the front are called. But all the other images I'm quizzing you on are numbered clockwise from there.
An important idea to bear in mind is that completeness counts. In most cases, identifying the name of what's depicted would constitute partial credit, and identifying the source work would constitute partial credit as well. And some of the images in the banner have layers of meaning to them, e.g. a picture of a specific fictional character dressed up as another fictional character for Halloween, and all of those elements would be considered part of the overall correct answer. For example (hypothetically, obviously this does not appear in the banner):
The killer from the Friday the 13th movies = partial credit
Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th movies = more credit
Snoopy dressed as Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th movies, from the animated special It's a Bloodbath, Charlie Brown! = full credit
You can enter with some or all all of the answers in varying degrees of completeness. All entries received by midnight (EDT) on Halloween will be evaluated and whoever scores the most points will win a goodie bag of used paperback horror novels and leftover candy. The correct answers and congrats to the winner(s) will appear on the blog on November 1st. Good luck!
